"Custom Homes" Series Statement

“Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit.”
Edward Abbey Down the River

My passion for the landscape informs my work as I photograph the man-altered environment and explore its cultural implications in suburban settings across the country. Suburban sprawl, overdevelopment and overconsumption are primary interests of mine. Hiking in an area of pristine desert outside of Phoenix that I have been coming to for years, I stumbled on the beginning of yet another development out in the middle of nowhere where the developer, without any regard for nature, had bull-dozed down every living thing in an area that had been wilderness for thousands of years. Over the course of one winter, I felt compelled to document this death in the desert to bear witness to the continued, unnecessary devastation of the landscape that goes unseen by most people.

The photographs in this series are captured digitally and presented as archival pigment prints in editions of 5. Print size is 24" x 34".
